Corrales was born in Sinola, Mexico. On May 6, 2005, Corrales' body was found at about 7:30 p.m.,
floating in the Colorado River. A passer-by saw articles of clothing and blood in the river, and
called police. Corrales was found floating nearby, stabbed to death.
Police believe that Corrales was dressed as and attempted to pass as a woman at several
establishments during a “bar crawl” with friends, on May 5, 2005, and that it was a
“significant possibility” that Corrales left one of the bars that night with someone who
believed he was female.Court documents later said that Corrales was dressed as a woman when he and
Solorio met at a bar and left together. After several attempts to fondle Corrales, Solorio realized
Corrales was not a woman and stabbed him.
Ruben Solario was arrested on May 23, 2007, as the result of an anonymous tip, and booked in Yuma
County Jail on one count of second degree murder in Corrales' death.
On May 31, 2007, a grand jury indicted Solorio on charges of manslaughter and abandoning a body.
On July 23, 2008, in agreement with prosecutors, Solorio pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter.
The plea agreement, approved Superior Court Judge Mark Wayne Reeves, meant Solorio faced 8 3/4 years
in prison. Prosecutor Levi Gunderson acknowledged that Solorio did not plan the murder, but acted
out of rage and humiliation upon discovering Corrales' gender.
If I should go tomorrow
It would never be goodbye,
For I have left my heart with you,
So don't you ever cry.
The love that's deep within me,
Shall reach you from the stars,
You'll feel it from the heavens,
And it will heal the scars.
“Amancio”
Composed and Preformed by Anne James
In Honor of The Third Anniversary of Amancio’s Death
Where does the killer go
when the victim goes to sleep?
Safely tucked into
the sad tears that we weep
And lives cut short by hate crime
That violence tends to reap
Punished for the color of skin
or the language that they speak
And for the girls and boys
who aren’t exactly as they seem
Is the risk is worth the chance
to live within their dreams?
Why does the anger see the
and burst out of the seams
Those who kill for hatred
Not knowing what it means.
Amancio, I never knew,
nor Dalila, or any other
Who brutally was murdered
near the Colorado River
But I found a likeness in her eyes
embedded in her picture
The balance of hope and fate
This world could never give her
So I did not march to the call
against this sad hate crime
No, I did not stand up
and raise my voice this time
It didn’t seem to be my problem
at least for me to find
A moment from my busy day
to stop and wonder why.
How do the quiet few speak out
from the discontented masses?
Will days go by and lives be lived
until the violence passes?
Or will we stop the bully’s fists
on the victim he harasses
Or just walk on and look away
and know that this will pass us.
For the sake of Amancio
and a thousand more the same
Let him sleep as Dalila
for that may be her name
And you may think the killer
is the only one to blame
And you may think the law
is the only thing to change.
